"Sunken Road". This trail was worn down and sunken by years of wagon traffic and formed a natural trench. The Confederates positioned themselves there. However, it became a deadly trap for the Confederates when Union cannons were able to position at one end and was able to fire down the length of the trench. There were 5,600 casualties (Union 3,000, Confederate 2,600) along the 800-yard (700 m) road earning it the nickname "Bloody Lane". (source:wikipedia.org) Vi took this photo.
